If you accidentally delete a file stored on your hard drive, on a memory card, memory stick, USB flash drive, or another removable media, you can bring it back to life with the eDATA Unerase Personal Edition. This is a free data recovery tool that will scan your storage device, identify recoverable data, and then recover it. It is the lightweight edition of another software application developed by OctaneSoft, mainly eDATA Unerase Professional Edition.
To get started with eDATA Unerase Personal Edition you will first have to download an archive onto your machine. Then you will have to extract its contents and run the executable inside. A simple setup wizard will then take you through the installation process. You can install eDATA Unerase Personal Edition on anything from Windows 7 down to Windows 2000.
The interface eDATA Unerase Personal Edition presents to users is quite easy to figure out. In the pane to the left, the application displays your drives; in the pane to the right, it presents info on the selected drive. There are three buttons in the top right hand side for Settings, Live Update, and Help. The arrow button in the bottom right hand side is for starting the scan and the recovery process.
To recover deleted or lost data, you must first select a drive, then click on the aforementioned arrow button. You will then have to pick one of two scan modes (Quick Scan or Full Scan), and enter some “Search for” parameters (pick the type of file you want to recover). eDATA Unerase Personal Edition will then scan the selected drive for the file type specified and it will present you with a list of recoverable items.
eDATA Unerase Personal Edition is freeware. For no charge whatsoever it will scan for and recover multimedia files, documents and archives, web pages, applications and databases. It will not scan for nor will it recover pictures and images; that feature is reserved for eDATA Unerase Professional Edition.

The Personal Edition does not recover images and pictures; the Personal Edition does not let you enter all or part of the file name. To enjoy these functions you must switch to the paid Professional Edition.
